Chapter-2
Bhavatyeva Hi Tasyaanta, Kaale Vikshepa Mulkatam
Even if one is the perceiver of all principles, if he becomes the forsaker of Guru, there will be great derangement at the time of his end.
Kaalamrityu Bhayaadwaapi, Guruh Samtraati Paarvati!
Oh, Parvati! Guru saves a person, even if cursed by the sages, snakes or gods. Guru saves one even from the fear of death.
Guru shaapopapannasya, Rakshanaaya Cha Kutrachil
Even the gods and the sages are incapable of saving one who is cursed by Guru, wherever he is indeed.
Te Vai Sanyaasina Proktho, Itare Vesha Dhaarinah
Those who know the meaning of great principles through service at the feet of Guru are only called Sanyasis. Others are attired with the clothes (of a sanyasi).
Samataa mukhtimaargena, Swam aatmagyaanam Pravartate
By the grace of Guru, a person see his own self, submerged in the bliss of Supreme God and attains in Guru equipoise of mind, which is the path of liberation. Knowledge of the Self works thus.
Nityambrahma rasam Peetwa, Tripto yah Paramaatmani
Indrancha Manyate Rankam, Nripaanaam Tatra Kaa Kadhaa ?
Guru, who is contented in Supreme God, drinking always the nectar of god consciousness, considers even Indra, the lord of gods, as a pauper. Then what is there in the case of kings?
Adhyaatmadeeni Shaastraani, Gyaanam Naasthi Gurum Vina
Oh, Dear! Even if all Vedas are learnt along with the six-fold Vedic sciences, and also rituals and other spiritual and philosophical doctrines, 'self knowledge' cannot be gained without Guru.
Shivaruupam Swaruupam Cha, Na Jananthi Yahaswayam
A person without Guru does not know his own 'self', which is in the form of bliss. Such a man, without Guru, can be called a beast, insect or bird.
Vihaaya Shaastra Jaalaani, Gurumeva Samaashrayel
Therefore, with all efforts, devoid of attachments and steering clear from the thick of doctrines, one should take refuge in Guru only.
Swa Vishraantim Na Jaanaati, Para Shaantim Karoti Kim?
The Guru, who is bereft of knowledge, and who proclaims untruth, and who is a swindler should be discarded. One who does not know his own rest, how can he help others to attain peace?
Swayam Tartum Na Jaanaati, Param Nistaarayel Kadham ?
What is the knowledge of a rock in taking to the other shore a cluster of other rocks? How can one help others to swim when he himself does not know how to swim?
Varjayettan Guroon Doore, Dheerasyatu Samaashrayel
Such people are not be saluted, who are miserable by sight and creators of delusion. Such gurus should be discarded very far. One should take refuge only in the courageous.
Streelambata Duraachaarah, Kritaghnaah Baka Vritayah
Swindlers, sinners, unbelievers, the prejudiced and womanisers, the corrupt and the dishonest and those who act like a crane (crane sits silently but gulps down its prey when becomes handy)
Kaaminah Krodhinashchaiva, Himsrashchanddah Shattashtadhaa
And those who have lost the path of action and patience, those who are unyielding and abominable, contentious and quarrelsome, greedy and wrathful, violent and cruel,
Eabhyo bhinno Guruh Sevyah, Eka Bhaktya Vichaarya Cha
The above categories of people who have lost wisdom and are sinners should not be accepted as Gurus. Oh Dear! Gurus who are different from these should be known and served with devotion.
Gooddo Dridaashcha Preetaashcha, Maunena Susaamaahitah
Sakrit Kaamagatovaapi, Panchadha Guru Reeritah
There are five types of Gurus; The impenetrable; the resolute; the pleased; the silent and the fulfilled.
Lokopakaarakam Devi!, Laukikamtu Vivarjayel
Oh Dear! I shall tell you the duty to be observed by such seekers. Oh Goddess! They should endeavour for the welfare of the world, but at the same time they should discard worldly attachments.
