Iti Sampraarthita Saswat, Mahaadevo Maheshwara Aananda Bharita Swaante,
Paarvatim idam Abhraveet

Shiva, the highest god, most pleased in his heart by these fervent prayers, told the following words to Parvati.

The glory of Guru

Shiva said

Mama Ruupasi Devi ! Twam, Atastal Kadhayaamite

Lokopakaaraka Prasno, Na Kenapi Kritah Punah

Oh Goddess! You are my nature. This question which is beneficial to the world has not been asked by anyone before. Therefore, I am revealing it to you.

Yo Guru Sah Shiva Prokto, Yah Shiva Sah Guru Smrita

Vikalpam Yasthu Kurveeta, Sah Naro Guru Talpaga

One who is termed as Guru is God. One who is understood as God is Guru. And the man who doubts this goes to sleep on the bed of Guru.

Durlabham Trishu Lokeshu, Tat Shrunushwa Vadaamyaham

Gurur Brahmavina Naanyal, Satyam Satyam Varaanane

Oh beautiful one! I will tell you that which is very rare in the three worlds. Please listen. There is no other truth than Guru God. This only is the truth.

Veda Shaastra Puranani, Cha Idihasaadikanicha

Mantra Yantraadi Vidyaashcha,Mohanochaadanaadikam

Shaiva Shaaktagaamaadeeni, Tyanyecha Bahavomataah

Apabhramshah Samastaanam, Jeevaanaam Bhraanta Chetasaam

Since the four Vedas, six sciences, eighteen Puranas, epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata, practices like Mantra, Yantra, Seduction, exorcism etc., spiritual cults like Shaiva, Shakteya, Sankhya etc. and many other paths together delude men, people are led astray.

Japah Tapo Vritam Teertham, Gyaano Daanam Tadhaiva Cha

Guru Tatwam Avignaaya , Sarvam Vyartham Bhavet Priye !

Oh, Dear! Japa (the recitation of mantra) Tapa (spiritual austerity) Vows, visiting of holy places and also the path of Knowledge and Meditation come to naught without knowing the truth of Guru.

Dehi Bhrahma Bhavedyasmaal, Twal Kripaartham Vadaami Tal

Sarva Paapa Vishudhaatma, Shri Guroh Paadasevanaal

I shall tell you for your compassion how a soul after freeing itself from all sins becomes purified and becomes godly. It is through service at the feet of the blessed Guru.

Swadeshikasyaiva Cha Naamakeertanam
Bhavet Ananthasya Shivasya Keertanam
Swadeshikasyeva Cha Naama Chintanam
Bhavet Ananthasya Shivasya Chintanam

The glorification of the holy name of one’s own Guru will verily become the glorification of the infinite God, and the contemplation of ones’ own Guru's name will verily become the contemplation of the God eternal.

Swaashramamcha Swajaatim Cha, Swa Keertim Pushti Vardhanam

Etal Sarvam Parityajya, Gurumeva Samaasrayet

A person should take refuge only in Guru, leaving aside everything such as ones’ own duty, own caste, own fame and desire for wealth.

Suta, who was thus prayed again and again by the assembly of sages, spoke sweet words as follows, with greatest pleasure.

Shrunudhwam Munayah Sarve, Shradhaya Parayaa Mudaa

Vadaami Bhavaroga ghnim, Geetaam Maatri Swaruupinim

I am reciting to you Guru Geeta, which is the form of Mother, and which destroys one’s afflictions. You all sages please listen with great attention and joy.

Puraa Kailaasa Shikhare, Sidha Gandharva Sevite

Drishtwa Vismayaapannah, Paarvati Paripritchati

Once on the peak of mount Kailas - which is most beautiful like a palace of flowers and is adorned by celestial powers like Sidhas and Gandharvas - Shiva

was discoursing among the assembled sages about the supreme truth, seated well on a tiger skin and surrounded by worshipful sages such as Suka. Parvati, whose head is always bowed due to constant obeisance, implores Shiva thus in bewilderment.

Vidhi Vishnu Mahendraadhyai, Vandhya khalu Sadaa Bhavaan

Namaskaroshi Kasmai Twam, Namaskaraashraya Kila !

You are indeed being worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Indra etc. always. Then whom do you worship, when you are the object of all worship!

Kena Maargena Bho Swaamin!, Dehi Brahma Mayo Bhavet

Tat Kripaam Kurume Swaamin!, Namaami Charano Tava

Oh Lord! Kindly tell me that path by which soul attains union with God. Oh, Lord! I bow unto your feet

HOW TO BUILD SELF CONFIDENCE continues...

5) Long Preparation:

It's not enough to manage things, but it is important to manage them well. Great things happen not out of magic or miracles but out of systematic preparation. Those who do not prepare well and try to manage things haphazardly always meet with embarrassment and utter failure. Most of the people keep on thinking about goals but do not pay attention to the minute details which will help them to achieve it. We all know that on 11th September 1893 Vivekananda became a world famous figure when he addressed the parliament of religions in Chicago. But we forget that success didn’t come even to the great Swamiji overnight. Preparation started from the day he
came into contact with his Master, Sri Ramakrishna, at the age of 17.Sri Ramakrishna knew that his disciple Narendranath was going tobecome a world teacher, and he moulded his life accordingly. Training of the guru, first-hand knowledge of the people during his wandering days, deep study of scriptures and different branches of knowledge, his love and compassion for the entire mankind, spiritual discipline and realisation of the ultimate reality were the factors behind hi success. Without proper preparation no person can be confident of success.

"Pay as much attention to means as to the end."
Swami Vivekananda

A BIG IRRUPTION

VOLCANOES-SLEEPING DRAGONS

A volcano is a place on the Earth's surface (or any other planet's or moon's surface) where molten rock, gases and pyroclastic debris erupt through the earth's crust. Volcanoes vary quite a bit in their structure - some are cracks in the earth's crust where lava erupts, and some are domes, shields, or mountain-like structures with a crater at the summit.

Magma is molten rock within the Earth's crust. When magma erupts through the earth's surface it is called lava. Lava can be thick and slow-moving or thin and fast-moving. Rock also comes from volcanoes in other forms, including ash (finely powdered rock that looks like dark smoke coming from the volcano), cinders (bits of fragmented lava), and pumice(light-weight rock that is full of air bubbles and is formed in explosive volcanic eruptions - thistype of rock can float on water). Volcanic eruptions can cause great damage and the loss of life and property.

The Word Volcano:
The word volcano comes from the Roman god of fire, Vulcan. Vulcan was said to have had a forge (a place to melt and shape iron) on Vulcano, an active volcano on the Lipari Islands in Italy.

Extreme Volcanoes:

The largest volcano on Earth is Hawaii's Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa is about 6 miles (10 km) tall from the sea floor to its summit (it rises about 4 km above sea level). It also has the greatest volume of any volcano, 10,200 cubic miles (42,500 cubic kilometers). The most active volcano in the continental USA is Mt. St. Helens (located in western Washington state). The largest volcano in our Solar System is perhaps Olympus Mons on the planet Mars. This enormous volcano is 17 miles (27 km) tall and over 320 miles (520 km) across.

Biggest irruption

Supervolcano eruptions are the greatest in the world in volume of ash released. They aren't in Ginness because nobody watched them: the youngest is 70,000 years old. When another occur, it will be the deadliest in history.

The largest volcanic eruption in recorded history is that out Mount Tambora on Sumbawa island, Indonesia. Taking place on 10 April 1815, the eruption was so loud it sounded like a a gunshot to people on the island of Sumatra, 2,600 km (1,615 mi away). Only one larger eruption has occurred in the last three thousand years: that of Mt. Taupo, New Zealand in 181 CE. However, because no historians — in fact, no humans at all — were on New Zealand at the time, the largest volcanic eruption in history remains Mt. Tambora. Signs of the eruption began when a dark cloud of ash formed over the mountain and the ground started to rumble. Several minor eruptions occurred over several days. Thousands watched the eruption unfold. At 7 PM on 10 April, three columns of flame "rose up and merged" and the mountain was turned into "liquid fire". About 100 km3 (38.6 mi3) of pyroclastic trachyandesite was ejected, enough to qualify as a 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. All vegetation on the island was destroyed. 10,000 people were killed in the pyroclastic flows.

The eruption ejected enough ash into the upper atmosphere to block part of the light from the Sun for months on end. This caused 1816 to be called The Year without a summer, in which crops failed worldwide and at least 300,000 people starved or froze. On the plus side, the atmospheric dust from the volcanic explosion caused interesting optical effects, including the most spectacular sunsets in history.

The Year Without a Summer was harsh. Two huge snowstorms hit eastern Canada and New England dead in the middle of June. Nearly a foot of snow fell in Quebec City. As a result, the price of oats and other grains increased by about 700%. The event was called "the last great subsistence crisis in the Western world."

Although the explosion of Mt. Tambora was large, it is not the largest volcanic eruption in all of human history — just recorded history. The largest volcanic eruption in all human history is that of the former Mt. Toba Young Toba Tuff (Toba, Sumatra Island, 70,000 years ago): Released between 2500 and 3000 cubic km of ash, nearly extincted early humans. This was about 28 times larger than the 1815 eruption, and it is believed that the global human population may have been reduced to as few as 1,000 breeding pairs in the aftermath of the event.

The largest volcanic eruption in the history of the Earth were probably the series of eruptions 251 million years ago that created the Siberian Traps, a rock formation in what is now Russia. These eruptions lasted about a million years and released almost enough lava to cover the continent of Australia in a layer 1,000 m deep. This event resulted in the greatest mass extinction in Earth's history, during which 96 percent of all marine species and 70 percent of terrestrial vertebrates were wiped out.

HOW TO BUILD SELF CONFIDENCE continues...

4) Self-Respect:

It is a well-known fact that men of hard work, knowledge, wisdom and perfection are always honoured and respected everywhere, whereas the ignorant, inefficient, lazy and dull people always face humiliation and insult. There are people who, in spite of being humiliated, insulted, warned several times, issued memos, scolded for their blunders and even punished, never try to improve themselves. They are people with a thick skin. They suffer from all kinds of physical and mental tortures but don't want to change their attitude due to lack of self-confidence. But sensitive people consider humiliation worse than death and always try to improve in order to protect theirhonour and self-respect. Love for dignity and honour helps them to manifest hidden confidence within themselves and they rise to the occasion, and prove their mettle by accepting challenges in life.

The great poet Kalidasa was an illiterate and a dullard. Some pundits, who had been defeated in arguments by a highly intelligent princess Vidyottama, got her married to Kalidasa in a deceitful manner out of jealousy. When the truth came out she felt greatly disturbed and admonished Kalidasa for his ignorance. His honour was at stake. He felt deeply hurt and humiliated. He took it as a challenge and decided to become a learned man. This feeling of self-respect ignited his confidence. He left home and returned only after he had become a man of profound learning.

THE WORD GURU

The word ‘Guru’ is derived from the Sanskrit language and has a deep spiritual meaning. Its two syllables Gu and Ru stand for the following:

Gu denotes the spiritual ignorance that most of mankind is in.
Ru represents the radiance of spiritual knowledge that dispels the spiritual ignorance.

In short, the Guru is the One who dispels the darkness of spiritual ignorance in man and bestows upon him spiritual experiences and spiritual knowledge.

The Tiger
Tiger

A teacher and his student were walking from one village to another, when they suddenly heard a roar behind them. Turning their gaze in the direction of the roar they saw a big tiger following them. The first thing the student wanted to do was to run away, but as he has been studying and practicing self-discipline, he was able to halt himself, waiting to see what his teacher was going to do.

"What shall we do Master?" Asked the student.

The teacher looked at the student and answered in a calm voice:
"There are several options. We can fill our minds with paralyzing fear so that we cannot move, and let the tiger do with us whatever pleases it. We can faint. We can run away, but then it will run after us. We can fight with it, but physically it is stronger than us."

"We can pray to god to save us. We can choose to influence the tiger with the power of our mind, if our concentration is strong enough. We can send it love. We can also concentrate and meditate on our inner power, and on the fact that we are one with the entire universe, including the tiger, and in this way influence its soul."

"Which option do you choose?"

"You are the Master. You tell me what to do. We haven't much time", responded the student.

The master turned his gaze fearlessly towards the tiger, emptied his mind from all thoughts, and entered samadhi (a kind of trance). In his consciousness he embraced everything in the universe including the tiger. In this deep meditation the consciousness of the teacher became one with consciousness of the tiger.

Meanwhile the student started to shiver with fear, as the tiger was already quite close, ready to make a leap at them. He was amazed at how his teacher could stay so calm and detached in the face of danger.

Meanwhile the teacher continued to meditate without fear. After a little while, the tiger gradually lowered its head and tail and went away.

The student asked his teacher in astonishment, "What did you do?"

"Nothing. I just cleared all thoughts from my mind and united myself in spirit with the tiger. We became united in peace on the spiritual level. The tiger sensed the inner calmness, peace, and unity and felt no threat or need to express violence, and so walked away."

"When the mind is silent and calm, its peace is automatically transmitted to everything and everyone around, influencing them deeply", concluded the teacher.

3) Will-Power:

We are experts in taking vows and breaking them within no time. It is easy to take vows but difficult to keep them up. We need the will of Bhisma, who took a vow of life-long celibacy and practised it diligently. Weak minds always search for excuses. The mind is fickle and restless by nature, always ready to compromise and vacillate. Those who possess a strong will and are determined to achieve great things never listen to their minds. They make their minds work for
them to achieve higher things in life. King Vishvamitra was arrogant and created problems for sage Vashistha; but when he was humiliated by Vashistha, realising the strength of spiritual knowledge, he decided to become a brahmarshi. He was caught in the web of lust when Menaka tempted him into indulgence. He had to overcome all the impediments, such as anger, hatred, jealousy, pride, envy, delusion for the attainment of that state. He could succeed because of his tremendous will-power. He was never disheartened by failure. His determination and will power
helped him to awaken confidence which in turn led him to success.

"You must not say that you are weak. How do you know what possibilities lie behind that degradation on the surface? You know but little of that which is within you. For behind you is the ocean of infinite power and blessedness."
Swami Vivekananda.
